Best Wine At Whole Foods Buying Guide

Before choosing the best wine you should consider following options:

1. Alcohol by Volume: The ABV tells you how strong your wine is. It’s expressed as a percentage of alcohol by volume.

Alcohol percentages can vary greatly by style. For example, a light, dry red wine typically has an ABV of 12 to 13 percent while a rich, sweet dessert wine can have an ABV of 16 to 18 percent.

Higher alcohol levels are associated with higher levels of flavor, body, and richness.

2. Tannin: Tannin is a bitter, astringent substance found in grape skins and seeds. The amount of tannin present in a wine can have a major impact on its taste and character.

Tannin can give wine a drying effect in the mouth, which some people enjoy and others don’t.

If you don’t like tannin, you may want to choose a wine with a relatively low tannin content.

Low tannin wines include Beaujolais, Pinot Grigio, and many light-style red wines.

Medium tannin wines include most dry red wines. High tannin wines include many full-bodied red wines and some dry whites, such as Chardonnay.

3. Sweetness: Sweetness is sometimes expressed as grams of sugar per liter, abbreviated g/L.

However, this measurement is not the best way to indicate sweetness, as it doesn’t take into account the other acids and flavors in the wine.

Instead, we recommend looking at the total residual sugar (TRS), or the grams of sugar per liter of dissolved solids.

Typically, wines with a TRS of less than 0.5 g/L are quite dry. Wines with 0.6 to 1.2 g/L are off-dry. Wines with 1.3 to 2.6 g/L are medium-dry. Wines with more than 2.7 g/L are very sweet.

4. Acidity: Acidity is expressed as total acidity (TA), or the grams of tartaric acid per liter.

This measurement is important because it tells you how well the wine will pair with food.

Wines with high levels of acidity are typically more versatile because they help balance the richness of the food.

In general, wines with a TA of less than 0.6 g/L are very low in acidity. Wines with 0.7 to 1.5 g/L are low.

Wines with 1.6 to 3.0 g/L are medium. Wines with more than 3.0 g/L are high.

5. Style: Most wines are made with a blend of grape varieties. By knowing the styles of the grapes in a blend, you can gain a better understanding of the wine’s overall character.

For example, Chardonnay is typically made with a high proportion of Chardonnay grapes, which are rich and aromatic.

Pinot Noir is typically made with a high proportion of Pinot Noir grapes, which are very light and elegant.

Knowing the character of the grapes in the blend will help you predict the overall character of the wine.
